how could you? well, let's consider three things.

first, the susan conversation happens before the friends of narnia realize they are truly dead. i don't think they would have talked about her in that way if they knew they might never see her again. it's a conversation you have when you're deeply frustrated by a family member you're on complicated ground on, spoken like you're waiting for something to change for the better but not knowing what to do.

second, if we're meant to think that the friends of narnia are fine with how susan has been left behind, it's honestly par for the course with the rest of the deeply christian series for me. lewis doesn't seem to believe in universal salvation and it's up to people who don't believe that to imagine how christians who do cope with the idea that many people will not be saved. that leads me to the third discussion.

the discourse around the problem of susan is huge because it's a plot point highly politicized in specifically white pop cultural feminist talking points. jkr voiced disgust that susan becoming irreligious is symbolized by a shallow life specifically identified with feminine interests. pullman, Incorrectly i might add, says that aslan dooms susan to hell for discovering sex. the outrage centers on this idea of "letting women be feminine"*. it's never about the theological implications of damnation, and it never intersects with the (in my opinion) much more galling idea that apparently, if you're a good person who's a believer in another faith, you've secretly been a good christian all along. but because susan's a white woman, it's impossible for white people not to pitch in and clamor about what an outrage it is that susan was "excluded" when come on. people in real life choose to not align with christianity. susan chose to drift away from narnia. it is a reality that is disturbing in the context of this deeply allegorically religious series of books, but that is painted in a much more urgent light for this specific case because extremely shallow pop cultural feminist concerns about how it's so deeply terrible that a woman who's described as having become so materialistic and self-absorbed that she dismisses her family's beliefs as childish and silly... likes makeup and clothes.

*i recommend reading kat coffin's twitter thread on the problem of susan that summarizes best most of my beliefs about the specific feminist critique to be made of the plot point. i do want to add that i think it is sexist to describe susan's departure from narnian friendship in the language of feminine interests but to me it's such an extremely unimportant detail when, at least as someone who grew up christian, you can tell that the feminine parts of her new life are not the problem: it's that she's let materialism separate her from her family and of course, in the context of this unambiguously religiously supportive book, God. if it had been peter or edmund, that descriptive language might have centered on money and jobs and connections, as befit the life of a man in the era. if anything, i think it would have been worse if susan's irreligiosity had been coded using descriptions of how she's become a working woman. just something to think about when you're wondering whether the descriptions of "nylon and lipsticks" sounded so bad.

realized that the "problem of susan" misinterpretation is going to explode when the new narnia reboot drops and started chomping at the bit

As a general rule, I don’t like to purchase books with the intentions to become miserable from them. Anything that does manage to upset me (Twilight, ahem) I will promptly seize and desist from my shelves. I feel that every single book I presently own makes me happy in it’s own way.

I do not even know where to begin to direct my attention, but I own so many great works by so many talented authors: ie. J.R.R. Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, Neil Gaiman, H.P. Lovecraft, Beatrice Potter, Anne Rice, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, Tad Williams, Terry Goodkind, Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, Philip Pullman, Alexandre Dumas, Thomas Hardy, James Baldwin, etc.

Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.

Beautifully eloquent, but it had me crying by the third chapter.

Crown Duel and it’s sequel Court Duel by Sherwood Smith. I was thirteen when I first read these books. I have yet to discover another literary work that reaches their level of energy and passion. It’s romance is enigmatic and alluring. They will always be pure magic and escapism for me.

Candide by Voltaire. I feel like so much happens in so few pages that you are left going, “what was that about....?” And then, you find yourself going over it again wondering what madness your plunging yourself back into.

I have not learned anything yet by doing so, for the record, except I am being the indulgent fool Voltaire thinks most of society is.

I have very complex feelings and opinions about the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer.

I wouldn’t say I “used to love it” so much as I had high hopes it would get better, only to discover it really does not get better.

I was 18 when I read the Twilight series with no prior conceived prejudices regarding it, simply because they didn’t exist for anyone around the time. I was consuming each book immediately as it was being published. And you know what? I’ve never been more disappointed in myself.

I really do not even know where to centralize my disgust first: do I address New Moon’s insulting representation of mental illness by omitting written pages?

There are entire pieces of paper wasted on nothingness. No writing. Depression is not this empty and meaningless. It is more nuanced than what she represents it as.

I remember thinking ‘how much of a selfish individual do you have to be, how absolutely disconnected from reality, to contribute to the waste of trees in this way?’

Or do I dive into the waking nightmare that is all of Breaking Dawn? I really wish I can say I have hallucinated this entire series, but alas...no.

You know a book is awful when it is capable of creating trauma. I could not look at people for days, because I didn’t know how to mentally process it’s finale. It was a highly negative experience for me and taught me a lot about how I value my mind and time.

Now, all criticism aside of Meyer’s Twilight Series and concerns about her intentions, I will be honest that not every piece of her writing is this poor. People can experience growth and recognize a need for improvement. She is not immune to this and with that said....

If you really want to try one of Meyer’s works, I would recommend The Host, instead.

I was 21 when I read it. So a few years passed since Twilight was initially published. Yes, I did give her a second chance despite what I had gone through. Did it make me a big fan? No. But, it was a pleasant enough experience for me to forgive her, somewhat.

It does start off slow and confusing, but begins to improve after four chapters. It’s not terribly original or complex, but at least the plot has some merit.

It’s worlds different and entertaining enough to make you wonder if you are reading the work of another author. Or like I said previously, maybe she realized the need for improvement by the creation of this novel.

Thank you for helping me put my finger on what bothered me so much about the "Elven gods" bullshit holy fuck????!?!? I almost dropped my damn computer when I realized. All these Christian-culture writers think it's cool and edgy to write other peoples' religions as inherently inferior and flawed and "debunked", but it would be Disrespectful for Fantasy Jesus to get the same treatment. The obvious ethnocentrism is disgusting.

(PS my favorite subversion of this is the Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman, have you ever read those? Talk about a scathing criticism of the Christian authority hidden under some wacky fantasy lol.)

tbh it wasn’t until i left the church and started exploring other belief systems that i really started recognizing this trope for what it was. it’s just so prevalent and so ingrained in the western fantasy tradition da and its ilk are fimly placed in and grew out of. i feel like c.s. lewis can be blamed for a lot of it (w a side of tolkien)

i haven’t read HDM and tbh i was always hesitant even though i’m always interested in deconstructions of christianity as an institution. i have this inherent kind of reflexive wariness about white guy atheist sf/f authors in how they approach religion in their stories, because i’ve seen deconstructive critiques of “religion” in stories veer uncomfortably into racism and classism

like i said I never read these particular books before. he may avoid that. but I’m wary because I’ve been burned a lot.
